A proposed rule announced Thursday by the Labor Department would require most federal promoted contractors to set a goal of having disabled workers make up at least 7 percent of their employees.

In previous years, the government has greatly promoted the hiring of women and minorities, but is now devoting resources and efforts to recruit and hire more disabled workers.

Because people with disabilities are most prone to discrimination, this new law will provide disabled workers with an opportunity to search for a job and not be afraid of being discriminated.

It is ironic that The Scooter Store, a Texas-based retailer which serves people with limited mobility, has been sued by the U.S Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) for disability discrimination.

According to the EEOC, the retailer refused to accommodate an employee’s request for a temporary leave due to a knee injury and then fired him from a New York store.

EEOC says that the employee informed the company that he was incapacitated due to psoriatic athritis and required a leave for treatment, but his request was denied. He was then let go, reportedly for job abandonment.

Just four months after their national class-action lawsuit against sexual discrimination toward many female employees, Wal-Mart is yet again faced with a new lawsuit filed against them last week.

The suit seeks to make its way past the obstacles set in the women’s path by the Supreme Court that narrowed their claims to the California stores of the retail chain.

The new lawsuit is limited to approximately 90,000 women as opposed to the 1.5 million in the first case.

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has filed a suit against the Texas Roadhouse Restaurant franchise, alleging that they intentionally discriminated against older workers.

The company allegedly rejected workers over the age of forty for jobs as waiters and bartenders by telling them, “We think you are a little to old to work here.”

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs announced that Tyson Fresh Meats Inc. has entered into two cases to settle allegations of sex discrimination.

The Dakota based company will pay a total of $2.25 million in back wages, interest and benefits to more than 1,650 qualified female job applicants who were rejected for employment at facilities in Joslin, Ill, West Point, Neb.; and Waterloo and Denison, Iowa.

Three female co-workers walked away with $3.2 million after a federal jury in Houston reached a verdict against a former judge.

The jury ruled that the former judge created a hostile work environment for the three co-workers who claimed he had groped, fondled, and sent them inappropriate photographs among other things.

Wrongful termination can happen to anyone. Earlier this year, former ESPN announcer Ron Franklin, was fired after 25 years with the network.

ESPN terminated him after offending sideline reporter Jeannine Edwards at an event on New Year’s Eve. The network took him off of New Year’s Day coverage the following morning.
